The end of the world....... as we know it.

Back in 2011 there were claims based on Mayan prophecies that come 2012 the world would end (yet again), however this doesn't mean the end of humanity, merely the end of things as we know it; The beginning of a new era, new ways of life etc.

Thinking about it this morning whilst in the shower, this certainly seems to be true. Since 2012 we have had the following things:

*Ukraine/Russia split for claimed independence. Whether this is just Russia wanting to build its empire again, who knows.

*Rise of ISIS (IS)militant groups

*Ebola crisis in Africa

*Scottish independence referendum

*UK Economy/unemployment increases

*Rise in minimum wage in states across America

*Gay marriage legalised in UK

*Return of fighting to Iraq/Afghanistan

*Thailand revolution of trying to overthrow the government

All of these are major things. What is next? What will follow? Certainly a new way of life, revolutions are taking place all over the world as we grow tired of how things are and want better futures, at what cost will this come?

Marriage

Marriage is supposed to be a once in a lifetime event. Finding your one true love and agreeing to be with them until death.  A sort declaration of undying love.

But is marriage necessary? Has it become engrained into society so much that not getting married but instead choosing to cohabit with the one you love is seen as odd?

99% of women dream of their big day. Having the white dress, church wedding etc. Basically not a day to show your love for someone but a day to show off.

The exchanging of rings as a sign of eternal love doesn't bother me, rather the signing of a piece of paper overseen by a religious organisation for which most people do not belong is the problem. It seems rather contradictory to undergo such an expensive ceremony in a venue where most people do not attend or even believe in god. On top of that, having to sign a piece of paper to legalise your partnership just seems bizarre.

I'm not saying the celebration of 2 people dedicating themselves to each other is a bad thing. It's quite the opposite. Rather the idea of doctrine and legal involvement just seems so outdated now.

I'd love to get married one day, maybe soon, settle down and have a family, but I would want my wedding day to mean something both romantically and spiritually, so if that means creating your own ceremony, so be it. It would have to be jointly done too. None of this bridezilla nonsense of throwing tantrums. It is a day for both to enjoy.

Maybe I'm just being cynical or maybe the marriage system in our society needs to change to meet the needs of modern couples.

The 5 senses

I was thinking the other day that the senses are very powerful tools. They all have ways of triggering memories in different ways, the strongest being smell.

If, however, someone were to lose of the senses, does that mean they may also lose some memory recall???

Random thought but it's interesting.

Life in space

I have always been interested in life, the universe and everything (ha love Hitchhikers Guide) but it is the thought that space seems to be infinite and we have no idea what is out there that really makes my mind whizz.

So many things to see and learn. Is there life out there? Recently I read an article in 'how it works' magazine looking at telescopes and crafts that are currently up there trying to determine planets similar to earth, when looking at the topic of life in space I noticed a curious but rather closed minded answer - there can be no intelligent life in space as the conditions do not match that of our planet.

Now, this seems, for people who are supposed to be highly intelligent, a rather stupid answer. Evolution allowed life on earth to adapt so we could live as we are, so why cant there be life elsewhere under different conditions??

Why must we always compare things to what already exists? Even microbial life seems to be ignored yet this is a major issue! Life exists under completely different conditions that could evolve, given the chance and we turn away from it because it isn't 'intelligent'. What the hell?!?

Nothing should be ignored in space - as the UK government campaign says 'the possibilities are endless'.

UK Riots

A little delayed (it was stuck as a draft post)....

--------

After all the trouble the UK has experienced during the past 2 weeks - why were people rioting?

It started as a peaceful protest to demand justice and an explanation as to why a black male was shot dead by police inside a taxi. Police claimed Mr Duggan had a gun and shot at 1 officer. This was later shown to be untrue. During the protest a group of people broke away from the main march and started to vandalize nearby shops and homes. They set fire to cars, rubbish bins and began creating petrol bombs.

I would argue this is NOT about wanting justice for Mr Duggan or his family, but a group of people who are simply saw an opportunity to cause trouble. This small group quickly became hundreds of people all across London targeting mainstream shops. One group of looters said they joined in because it was "free shopping". This group, consisting of 16 and 17 year olds claimed they were looting not to harm anyone or to cause violence, but because the government had done nothing to help them gain employment or further their education. This meant that they could not afford to support themselves and their children, therefore the "shopping" was not simply to grab anything, but to loot baby supplies like nappies, clothes and food.

Now, under societies "moral code" stealing is wrong. But is it still wrong when sections of society are not providing for others? Its the age old question - if a poor guy steals a loaf of bread to feed his family - is this wrong?

Is stealing wrong under all circumstances or should more be done to help those in need?

What is love?

What is love?

Is it a single form? Many forms?

Is it real? Imaginary?

Shampoo

Random thought...

Where does the word shampoo come from?

Body wash makes sense, conditioner is logical, but shampoo?

What does it actually mean - and not in the physical sense that we know - ie to wash hair but literally, what does the word mean and where does it originate???
